
Paramount and Playmates Toys have lately revealed that their long-standing licensing settlement regarding Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) merchandise is not going to be renewed.
Since 1988, Playmates Holdings’ subsidiary Playmates Worldwide has held the rights to design, manufacture, distribute, and promote TMNT-branded merchandise below license from Viacom Media Networks, a division of Paramount. The businesses have been in renewal negotiations since October, however Playmates has now obtained a proper notification that the licensing settlement will finish on Dec. 31, 2026. Playmates retains the appropriate to promote its remaining TMNT stock for a further 90 days after the expiration.
Licensed TMNT merchandise have represented a good portion of Playmates Toys’ revenue in recent times — 8% in 2021, 13% in 2022, 77% in 2023, 47% in 2024, and 36% simply between January and June of 2025.
